What is Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty?
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive procedures used to treat painful spinal fractures, most commonly caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or tumors. In vertebroplasty, medical-grade bone cement is injected into the fractured vertebra to stabilize it and relieve pain. Kyphoplasty is a similar procedure but involves the use of a small balloon that is inserted and gently inflated inside the collapsed vertebra to restore some of its lost height before filling the space with bone cement. Both procedures are performed under imaging guidance, usually take less than an hour, and help patients experience rapid pain relief, improved mobility, and quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Preparation
The patient lies face down on the procedure table.
Local anesthesia and mild sedation are given for comfort.
Imaging Guidance
X-ray (fluoroscopy) or CT scan is used to precisely locate the fractured vertebra.
Needle Insertion
A hollow needle is carefully inserted through the skin into the fractured vertebra.
Kyphoplasty (extra step)
A small balloon is placed through the needle and gently inflated.
This helps restore some height of the collapsed vertebra and creates space for the cement.
